I live in front of screens. I hate to admit it, but I spend around four hours daily looking at my iPhone. I know this because my iPhone painfully reminds me at least once a week. “This week, your screen time was up 26%!” my phone emphatically reminds me. Awesome, why not just add in “loser” at the end, I think to myself as I read this notification.

Why BlueLight Glasses Are Important

As hard as I am on myself, that’s part of living in today. We live in a digital world, filled with screens everywhere we look. I live a life of transition, like many – transitioning from one screen to the next. The phone. The TV. The computer. Back to the phone. I’m not complaining though – technology, which you often need to consume through a screen, has enabled countless incredible things. One of those that I never take for granted is how easy it is to stay in touch with the people I love who live many miles away now. I’m in my mid-30’s – most of my family and friends now live over 300 miles away. I may see them 3-4 times a year now, but FaceTime has made keeping in touch a breeze.

One of the other things that technology via a screen has made possible, is the utter destruction of my eyes. Prolonged exposure to blue light can strain our eyes and unfortunately, that’s what I do most of the day. As my daily phone time sits around 4 hours a day, I also happen to be a remote employee. My office is our spare bedroom with a couple of monitors. I sit in front of those monitors most of the day. After work, I love to watch Bravo TV with my wife. By the time I lay down to fall asleep at night, my eyes hurt. Almost like sore muscles from doing 100 push-ups, my eyes have fatigue from a day of hard work of looking at screens. The phone. The TV. The computer. Back to the phone.

I needed a solution. My buddy had been telling me to try blue light glasses for years. I resisted though, mostly because when I used to work in office, a coworker wore them and to be honest, I thought they looked like a total dork. But when I recently spoke with him, he continued to push the blue light glasses.

I gave in.

Checking Out The Fallout Vault 33’s from Gunnar Optiks

I decided to go with the Fallout Vault 33’s from Gunnar Optiks in collaboration with Amazon Studios. I’m a sucker for co-branding, especially with anything video games. When they arrived in the mail, I was eager to try them out. The packing was cool, and in addition to the glasses, it came with a case, a storage pouch, and a lens cleaner.

They’re Great For Work!

I have had them now for about a week and I must admit, they work pretty well!

I’ve been wearing them religiously all week for work and the results have been almost instant. I can see the screen clearer with less strain on my eyes. The issue I mentioned earlier, where my eyes are sore at night, has almost evaporated.

It’s a small sample size, but I am eager to make wearing the Fallout Vault 33’s a continued part of my regular working regime.

Comfort Is King

They glasses are also quite comfortable, and I find that I wear them even when I’m not looking at a screen. I will walk into the kitchen wearing them and my wife will ask what I’m doing. “Oh I forgot I was wearing them,” I say. And I’ve never been a glasses person beyond sunglasses. But the comfort is great, and I forget they’re there. Which is the best compliment I can give.

But The “Cool” Factor Only Goes So Far…

Now, as much as the glasses have worked, I’m still too embarrassed to wear them in meetings where I am on a Zoom video call. While the glasses themselves I find stylish for blue light glasses… they’re still clearly blue light glasses. The lens are a yellow/amberish color. The one time I did wear them on a Zoom call, my coworkers, who know I don’t wear glasses, asked about them. They didn’t tease me or anything but I’m still working up the courage to wear them in meetings.

In Conclusion

I do recommend the Fallout Vault 33’s. Taking care of your eyes should be a priority, especially as screen usage continues to rise. Whether the style of the glasses is cool enough for me to wear in public, that’s not what’s really important about this product to me. What is important is they work and they work well. They have relieved strain on my eyes, and because of the comfort of them, I honestly forget they’re there. I’m excited to continue to wear them and hope this is another step towards making my daily working experience better for my eyes.
