In the pulsating realm of electronic music, a fresh beat often emerges from the familiar pulse of the past, and no one exemplifies this quite like Mary Droppinz. With her latest release “Ignite”, this prodigious talent serves an intoxicating mix of nostalgia and innovation. Having quickly ascended the ranks as a potent force in the global dance music arena, Droppinz continues to meld the UK’s electrifying soundscapes with America’s eclectic dance sensibilities.

Her newest track “Ignite”, birthed from the renowned hit “Gassed Up” by Zeds Dead and Subtronics, is a testament to her genre-bending prowess, creating a sonic experience that feels both intimately familiar and exhilaratingly new. As she gears up for her upcoming tour, Mary’s journey from Omaha’s rhythmic beginnings to the electrifying stages of festivals worldwide is a story of passion, persistence, and the pure power of music.

Can you describe the creative process behind your latest release, “Ignite”?

Ignite was a very unique process that I don’t normally do for my music-making but this was special. I really loved the original track that Zeds Dead, Subtronics, and Flow Dan created called “Gassed UP” and I reached out to the teams to get the stems to create my own version of it. They were down and after I sent the track ZD decided it would be great as an original track on their label. Couldn’t pass that up. My plan was to create an electro-bass version of the OG basically. I wanted to slow the track down from 140 to 132 BPM and make it an electro-bassy style track that could fit into house and techno sets. Building electro-influenced drum sequencing around Flow Dan’s vocals, “Ignite” was born.

How do you see your style evolving, and where do you see yourself fitting into the future of electronic music?

My style continues to evolve, that is what really made me fall in love with choosing the path as an artist is that evolution. Thinking about what music I was into nine years ago (when I first started DJing) to now, I would have never guessed that I’d go to where I have. I love sharing my take on electronic music and I think it has spoken to a lot of people- so I hope that it just continues and I keep carving out my little special space in this scene!

I plan to release more music, throw parties, teach future DJs how to spin, create a label, drop an album or two, and just build an empire of fire music and style.

Can you share more about your collaboration with the Altered States label and how that relationship came to be?

Altered States has been my label home for the last few years now. It was a magical connection- Zed’s Dead signed with the same management company as I am and it grew from there. I am super grateful that ZD and their team took the time to listen to my music and fell in love with it wanting to get behind me as an artist. Altered States really has been a safe space for me to express myself.

What was it like growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, and how did your father’s drumming influence your musical journey?

Growing up in Nebraska was super wholesome. I grew up in a loving family and was into traditional sports and arts. I was living an amazing, normal life and never thought that I could have big dreams come true such as making a career in music.

My dad playing drums at home gave me a lot of respect for the instrument and it has definitely been what has attracted me so much to electronic music, the drums. Listening to him jam and turn up the music on the way to school influenced my taste in electronic music, regardless if we were listening to classic rock or whatever- it still impacted the way I move and feel about music to this day.

Drums are everything to me in any track that’s what I look for and connect with first.

Lastly, what message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from your music, especially from your latest single “Ignite”?

I want everyone to get gassed up! It’s been a rough couple of years with the pandemic and everything.

Let’s reignite our passion for life and excitement for music!
