Welcome back to the eight iteration of this monthly chart, where we highlight and break down the top 15 bass music anthems. August’s selection encompasses a ton of Lost Lands 2024 headliners, including CloZee, Hairitage, and DRINKURWATER, to name a few.
However, we also have brain-melting representation from fast-rising underground artists such as VEIL, Steller, and thook, reflecting experimental bass, wubs, dubstep, trap, riddim, and everything in between. Enter the realm of sonic experimentation as we shed light on various bass-powered anthems and their creators.
Follow our Spotify playlist below to keep tabs on all the tracks we have featured (currently at 120 bangers) in our bass music chart this year:
Hairitage, Daemon – Parabellum [Deadbeats]
Starting us off with an electrifying fusion of rap, trap, and dubstep, Hairitage and Daemon push the limits of bass music with “Parabellum.” If you are digging the energy coursing throughout this intense track, then check out the rest of Hairitage’s LYSS EP, featuring a solo single and a collaboration with Wreckno.
DRINKURWATER – Sensation [Independent Release]
DRINKURWATER made a major comeback this month with his powerful new riddim track, “SENSATION.” The song eases in with a slow start, gradually intensifying before hitting a massive drop. True to his signature style, the lyrics keep the focus on the theme of staying hydrated. “SENSATION” is just the beginning, with more music (like his follow-up bass house heater “BODIES”) on the way as part of an upcoming project he plans to reveal soon.
Wilkinson, Emily Makis – Break It Down [BMG Rights Management]
One component that immediately locked me into “Break It Down” is its genre diversity. For people unfamiliar with Wilkinson, the first 45 seconds sounds like a track you could hear on a mainstream radio station. Emily Makis lyrics complement the instrumental perfectly, which catches you have guard as it erupts in to a heavy DnB bassline at the end of the opening minute. There are lethal dubstep chops thrown in as well, pairing with the fast-paced bassline.
Steller – Brand New Funk [Odyzey Music]
Odyzey Music dropped Muzique, Vol. 4 this past month, spotlighting a wide spectrum of underground and high-level artists across bass music, such as Ujuu, Bass Temple, CloZee, A Hundred Drums, Lab Rat, Auracle, Canabliss, Rendr, and more. Steller’s “Brand New Funk” is a culmination of groovy rhymes, uplifting funk, and new-age wubz that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Other standouts from the compilation are HABITAAT’s “Immersion” and Vincent Antone’s “No Brakes.”
Effin – Trouble [Independent Release]
Effin has been absolutely dominating the bass scene this year with his one-of-a-kind style of production, a melting pot of vintage records and modern bass production. His track “In The Sky” landed in March’s chart and “Love Potion” in April’s chart. “Trouble” combines sonic elements pulled from an old western film bridged with low-end bass that will shake your speakers.
thook – low pulse [thook sound]
thook has carved out his own lane in the underground world of trap music. Dropping a 16-track album, The Great Migration of Memory, he continues his hot streak of releases with “low pulse,” a driving piece of its surrounding three-track project, ROADMAP TO THE SUN. This tune is layered with thick drums and expertly placed acoustic guitar chords.
HOL! – VAMPIRE [Independent Release]
Descending into a chaotic pit of riddim, HOL!’s “VAMPIRE” is guaranteed to incite mosh pits wherever it is played, possibly even a Wall Of Death depending on the crowd size and venue. It’s extremely loud chops keep you on your toes while making you want to throw your head through a pile of bricks.
NITTI, OUTRAGE, Micah Martin – Stay Away [ALT / RAVE]
NITTI’s debut rocktronic collaboration, “Stay Away,” featuring producer OUTRAGE and metal vocalist Micah Martin, marks a bold new chapter in his musical journey. Blending alternative rock, emo, and metal with electronic elements, the track opens with gritty guitar riffs and nostalgic lyrics that echo early 2000s punk and alt-rock. The energy ramps up as drumming intensifies, and Micah’s vocals shift from rock to metal, delivering a raw portrayal of heartbreak in a toxic relationship.
Each of the three drops in “Stay Away” offers a unique sonic experience, culminating in a blend of riddim, dubstep, and future bass. The accompanying music video amplifies the track’s chaotic energy with visuals of headbanging, motorcycle burnouts, and an electrifying live performance.
Rated R, VRG – Stomp Womp [Independent Release]
Rated R left the dubstep community shell-shocked just a few weeks ago when he dropped his long-awaited Dirty South EP. This 5-track project includes viral bangers like “DIRTY SOUTH” and “Florida” with Florida Man Frank. “Stomp Womp” opens with a quote from Alfred in Batman: The Dark Knight saying “some men just want to watch the world burn” as a cinematic buildup takes over. All hell breaks loose during the drop, blessing listeners with ground-shaking riddim.
EAZYBAKED – NO [Memory Palace]
One glance at the artwork for “NO” and it is obvious that EAZYBAKED will be guiding you on a psychedelic adventure. A prime match for Of The Trees’ label Memory Palace, it is overflowing with grimy wubz designed to distort your reality. When I listen to this track, it truly feels like time slows down, and I am trapped in some sort of paradox that I don’t want to free myself from.
Joy Orbinson, Lil Yachty, Future, Playboi Carti – flex fm (freddit) [Hinge Finger]
Fred again.. showcases his unrivaled creativity and talent as an artist with this irresistible mashup. The “freddit” merges Lil Yachty, Playboi Carti, and Future’s “Flex Up” with Joy Orbinson’s recent hit “flight fm,” resulting in “flex fm.” Speaking on the song Fred again.. stated, “this is just real SoundCloud energy to me, like obviously you can hear with your ears I did basically nothing on this.”
Opiuo, Jordan Dennis – Gravitate (CloZee Remix) [Slurp Music]
Heading back over to wubby side of bass music, Opiuo shares A Shape of Sound Remixed.. This remix compilation has a broad scope of artists that flip his 2022 album hits into thrilling new versions. Some of the most infectious remixes is The Sponges’ of “Quiver,” Tripp St.’s remix of “Dopamine,” and of course CloZee’s of “Gravitate.” The French bass queen transforms Opiuo’s original collaboration with Jordan Dennis into a bass-fueled masterpiece.
Justin Jay, Don Jamal – Is this a dream? [Fantastic Voyage]
Justin Jay has constantly proved throughout his career that he can do it all when it comes to production. Uniting with Don Jamal for “Is this a dream?,” the two artists combine their signature styles to forge a hypnotic fusion of low-end bass. My favorite part of this track is all the obscure sounds that are woven into it, such as alarm clock noises, marimba, and more.
The Widdler – Elements [SubCarbon]
Born in Tel Aviv and now based in Austin, TX, The Widdler is a pioneering force in the underground dub circuit. His daily mix sessions ensure flawless live performances, blending diverse musical influences into sets that range from chilled reggae vibes to deep, bass-heavy grooves. Whether it’s relaxed atmospheres or intense basslines, The Widdler crafts each set with a unique touch that leaves a lasting impression. This carries over to his latest single “Elements” a trippy journey showered with ethereal vocal echoes and progressions of bass.
VEIL – Hellpod [Deadbeats]
Wrapping up August’s bass music chart, VEIL’s “Hellpod” delves into a dark, ominous realm, pulling listeners into a world of deep, underground beats and cutting-edge sound design. Sharp snares blend with eerie vocals, challenging the very essence of what’s real. This psychoactive gem is just a piece of the puzzle that makes up We Are Deadbeats Vol. 6, with other standout tracks from Hydraulix, Zeds Dead, Chee, Steller, Evalution, and Digital Ethos, to name a few.
